China: Foreign Phone Shipments Drop 21%

Shipments of foreign-branded phones, including Apple’s iPhone, in China tumbled 21% in January year-over-year, Reuters reported, citing data from a government-affiliated research firm
The data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, or CAICT, showed that in January shipments of foreign-branded smartphones in China fell to 4.398 million units, compared to 5.542 million units a year earlier, the report added, following calculations based on the data.
Overall phone sales in China declined 14.3% year-over year to 27.24 million units in January, the report noted.

Earlier this month, Jefferies said China’s smartphone growth momentum is stalling, and noted that Apple’s new iPhone 16e is likely underwhelming. Meanwhile, Apple’s 2025 calendar year iPhone shipment estimate was lowered by Citi Research due to a delay in the upgrade of Siri

According to Counterpoint Research, iPhone sales fell 18.2% in China in the fourth quarter of 2024, while Huawei took the top spot. Apple slipped to third place in the Chinese market with a 17.1% market share, behind Huawei with an 18.1% share and second placed Xiaomi with 17.2%
